Shaku Sōen 釈宗演 (1860-1919) was a Japanese Rinzai Zen monk who traveled to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) influenced by Fukuzawa Yukichi (1834–1901) and Torio Tokuan (a.k.a. Torio Koyata; 1847–1905). [1] He also visited Siam (Thailand) and China on his way home. He was also the first Zen Buddhist master to teach in the United States.
